The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), sponsored by PokerStars, is the internet’s largest online poker tournament. It can be played each September on the PokerStars site.
Established in 2002, it’s basically the online equivalent to the live World Series of Poker tournament, which plays out in Las Vegas yearly. Keeping with the precedent set by WSOP, WCOOP consists of a series of tournaments in which online gambling players compete in a variety of poker games. The poker games featured are Limit, Pot Limit and No Limit Texas Hold’em, Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo, Razz, Pot Limit Omaha High and Limit Omaha Hi/Lo, HORSE, 5 Card Draw, 2-7 Triple draw, 2-7 Single Draw and mixed limit games, and Badugi. WCOOP’s main event is No Limit Hold’em.
In addition to a cash prize, the winner of each WCOOP event receives an engraved 14-karat gold bracelet from PokerStars.
Another PokerStars-sponsored special mention in the realm of online poker tournaments (kind of) goes to the World Cup of Poker (WCP). Established in 2004, it’s a yearly poker tournament with preliminary rounds conducted online, and finals playing out in Barcelona, Spain. , estab which was established in 2004. This tournament begins with 46 teams, each of which consists of five players from thirty nine different countries. Teams are separated into eight regional groups, and each group competes for a spot at the finals where they play for cash prizes totaling $200,000.
